Jeff Lievense, Ph.D.

Dr. Jeff Lievense has extensive fermentation process development and scale-up experience with industrial-scale plants involving a wide range of products. He joined Genomatica, a bioengineering technology leader for the chemical industry, in 2012, and led scale-up of its GENO BDO™ (1,4-butanediol) bioprocess.

Prior to that, he was Executive Vice President, Process Development, at Amyris from December 2007 until April 2012, where he led development and scale-up of its Biofene® (farnesene) bioprocess. From 1994 to November 2007, he was Vice President, Technology and Process Development and served in other technology management positions in the Research and Development organization of Tate & Lyle Plc, a global food and agricultural ingredients company. At Tate & Lyle, his organization’s responsibilities included the fermentation R&D program, commercializing three large-scale industrial fermentation products, and developing and scaling a production process for Bio-PDO™ (1,3-propanediol) to 100 million pounds per year at a new plant in Loudon, Tennessee.

From 1993 to 1994, Dr. Lievense served as Vice President, Research and Operations and President, Bio-Business Incubator of Michigan for Michigan Biotechnology Institute, and from 1990 to 1993 as Director of Chemical Programs and Pathway Engineering for Genencor International. From 1982 to 1989, he held various process engineering, research scientist and product management positions at Eastman Kodak Company.

Dr. Lievense earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Purdue University and a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. In 2014, he was honored by Purdue with its Outstanding Chemical Engineer award.

Carole Cobb is Chief Operating Officer of GreenLight BioSciences, Inc. in Medford, Mass. In her 35-year career, she has held progressively more responsible positions in biotechnology with a specific focus on fermentation-based commercial manufacturing, including process development, worldwide manufacturing and global supply chain management.

She was previously SVP, Global Supply, at Genencor International and continued at that position following its acquisition by Danisco AS.  She oversaw the companies’ industrial biotechnology-based manufacturing strategy, growth and implementation during a period that saw the doubling of manufacturing infrastructure through acquisition, expansion and new plant construction in the U.S., Asia, South America and Europe. In that growing role, she oversaw 10 fermentation-based manufacturing plants in the U.S., Europe, China and South America as well as several major warehouse and distribution centers.

Ms. Cobb’s earlier positions at Genencor and Danisco, beginning in 1990, were in manufacturing plant management and business development. Before joining Danisco, she served for nine years as development/research engineer at Eastman Kodak Co. Ms. Cobb’s education includes an MBA in Finance from the University of Rochester as well as two B.S. degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo, the first in Biochemistry/Cell and Molecular Biology and a second in Chemical Engineering.

Dr. Gregg Bogosian has broad and deep experience with fermentation-based processes for manufacturing a wide variety of products, including living microorganisms, immobilized cell catalysts, proteins and enzymes, nucleic acids and small molecules including biofuels.  He is an expert in the biochemistry, genetics, physiology, genomics, and natural history and ecology of microorganisms.

As Managing Member of a consulting company, he works with numerous firms ranging from very early-stage start-ups to large multinational companies.  He also serves on the board of directors, or advisory boards, or as chief scientist of several companies.  He was a board member of Benson-Hill Biosystems from 2013-2015 and was Chief Scientist at NewLeaf Symbiotics, Inc. from 2011-2016.

Dr. Bogosian also has extensive experience in the patent arena. He is the sole or lead inventor on over 30 issued patents and pending patents.

Prior to taking an early retirement from Monsanto Company in late 2011, he served in a variety of roles during his 26 years with that company.  As a Senior Fellow, he worked as a player-coach in a close-knit research team whose accomplishments included the successful launch of Posilac, the world’s number one dairy veterinary drug.

Dr. Bogosian was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina. He earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Purdue University and a B.A. in Zoology from Miami University of Ohio.
