Inocucor Co-founders: Grannies for a More Sustainable Future

By Ananda Fitzsimmons

When I first met Dr. Margaret Bywater in 2007, I had a prototype microbial product and a big vision that agricultural chemicals could be replaced with microbial formulations that would improve soil health and crop yields and benefit human health and the environment. Dr. Bywater had been involved in the human genome project and was at the forefront of the molecular biology revolution in life sciences.

Scientists’ ability to understand DNA at the cellular level has revolutionized medicine. She understood immediately that working with microbial communities could result in a similar revolution in agriculture. And she decided that she’d like to be a part of that second revolution.

We joined forces and created Inocucor in 2008. For several years, we poured our time and our own money into developing our platform technology. During those early years both of us were blessed with the birth of a granddaughter. Maggie, as her friends and colleagues call her, hails from Sweden, so her granddaughter lives far away from Quebec. Nevertheless, I was able to follow Leah’s birth and her growing up through Maggie’s many stories and photographs.

This summer was the first time that Maggie’s welcomed Leah for a visit to Canada. We were finally able to introduce our granddaughters to one another and spend a beautiful day at the Montreal Jazz Fest together.

Our granddaughters are growing up, and our company is, too. There is a real hunger in the world now for the type of sustainable technology we are developing. We are proud that our grandchildren will grow up in a world where agriculture is safe and the environment is protected.

Inocucor Technologies Inc., based in Montreal, is an ag biotech company that develops sustainable biological products for agriculture targeting the phyto-microbiome—the seeds, plants, root systems and the soil surrounding them. Inocucor’s first-generation product, Garden Solution®, soon to be re-branded as Synergro, employs live microbes to actively improve the health of the entire phyto-microbiome. Its second product, Synergro Free and future generations of Inocucor products are powerful biological formulations for bio-stimulation, bio-fertility and bio-control targeting mainstream production agriculture.
